BOX SCORE
RADFORD, Va. – Fresh off being named the league's player of the week,
Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) recorded his 10th double-double of the season with 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead Radford to a 75-45 victory over Gardner-Webb in Big South men's basketball action Monday evening at the Dedmon Center.
Parakhouski, who has connected on 33 of his last 40 attempts (82.5 percent), finished 10-of-12 from the floor en route to his 18th career outing with 20 points or more.
“We did a nice job establishing an inside presence and Art continues to shoot an extraordinary percentage,” said Radford head coach Brad Greenberg.
Laz Trifunovic (Belgrade, Sebia) also hit double digits for the Highlanders scoring 16 points, including a pair of threes, while
Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley) added 10 points, five assists and four steals.
The Highlanders raced out to a 14-2 lead and stretched it to as many as 17 (23-6) on a Parakhouski layup before heading to the break with a 36-22 advantage.
Parakhouski, who recorded his third double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds) prior to intermission of the season, combined with Trifunovic (12 points) to score 30 of Radford's first half points.
Along with holding the Bulldogs to just 34.5 percent in the first 20 minutes of action, Radford controlled the glass, 24-13.
After Gardner-Webb (3-10, 0-3) scored the first four points of the second half to close to within 10, 36-26, the Highlanders responded with a 20-1 run highlighted by three buckets from downtown to stretch the lead to 29 (56-27) with 11:38 to play.
Radford (8-5, 4-0), which shot 49.1 percent (26 of 53) and made 7-of-13 (43.8 percent) from behind the three-point arc, limited the Bulldogs to 29.5 percent and just 2-of-20 from long range.
“We defended per our game plan with a focus on guarding Flittner to eliminate his three-point shooting ability," Greenberg said.
Grayson Flittner, the Bulldogs' second-leading scorer coming into the game, finished with just two points on 1-of-9 shooting.
“Guarding the three is the key to our success in Big South games,” Greenberg said.
Off to their best start in league play since the 1999-2000 campaign, the Highlanders have won 19 of their last 21 Big South regular season contests.
Jonathan Moore paced the Bulldogs with 10 points off the bench.
“There are still a number of areas we need to improve and that will be the focus of our next three practices going into three straight road games," Greenberg said
Radford will enjoy a five-day break before returning to the court Saturday evening in a 7 p.m. tip at High Point.
