BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va.
- Laura Waddell led three Radford players in double-figure kills as the Highlanders recorded their first win over Winthrop in nine years with a 3-2 victory (15-25, 25-16, 25-22, 18-25, 15-12) in Big South volleyball action Friday evening at the Dedmon Center.

Radford's (8-15, 2-7) last triumph over the Eagles came November 3, 2001.

Waddell finished with 13 kills, while Carly Fleming and Jesse Miedema put down 11 and 10, respectively. Desiree Aramburu contributed her ninth double-double of the season with 38 assists and 18 digs for the Highlanders. Katelyn Meeks paced Radford defensively with 20 digs.

As a team, Radford finished with a season-high 16.5 total blocks.

In addition to connecting on .310 of its attempts in the opening game, Winthrop (10-12, 7-3) closed on a 15-7 run to take game one, 25-15. Viola put down five of the Eagles 13 kills in the set.

With the second set tied 13-13, Radford went on an 8-1 run en route to tying the match at the break. Waddell paced the Highlanders in game two with four kills on eight attempts, while her club connected on .321.

After falling behind 5-1 in the third, Radford responded with a 12-5 run to go up 13-9. Winthrop slowly chipped away at the deficit and took a 22-21 advantage but the Highlanders closed with four straight points to secure the game, 25-21. Along with recording 5.5 team blocks, Radford held the Eagles to a .065 clip.

In game four, Winthrop used 15 kills and a .750 sideout percentage to force a fifth and deciding game. Becca Toor led the Eagles and all players with five on eight attempts.

The Highlanders led by as many as five (9-4) in the fifth before Winthrop closed to within one, 13-12. However, that's as close as the Eagles would get as Radford put away the match with a kill from Waddell and service Storm Melnick.

Both clubs finished with a .166 hitting percentage.

Despite the setback, Winthrop placed a pair in double figures, including Kaley Viola, who led all players with 19 kills. Toor was right behind her teammate with 18, while Kelsey Hall put up a game-high 53 assists.

Radford will return to the court Saturday at 4 p.m. When it hosts Charleston Southern in its annual Dig Pink match. Winthrop will travel to High Point Saturday at 2 p.m.
