VOLLEYBALL CLOSES HOMESTAND WITH 3-0 LOSS TO ELON

RADFORD, Va.
– The Radford volleyball team closed its three-match homestand with a 3-0 loss to non-conference opponent, Elon, on Tuesday night at the Dedmon Center.

The loss drops the Highlanders to 8-17, while the Phoenix improve to 15-12.

Megan McWhorter was the lone Highlander in double figures with 13 kills. The junior also led the club with 16 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.

Sarah Schermerhorn led Elon with 13 kills on 19 swings (.684), while Caroline Lemke and Traci Stewart chipped in nine kills each.

Elon's Megan McMahon led both setters with 40 assists and 10 digs.

In addition to 13 kills and a .820 sideout percentage, Elon held Radford to just six and a .000 attacking percentage en route to a 25-16 win in the first set.

Game two featured 11 ties and two lead changes before the Phoenix closed on an 8-4 run to win the set, 25-21, and take a 2-0 lead into the break. Elon finished with 15 more kills in the second, while Radford connected on 14 of 41 swings for a .171 clip.

After the Phoenix raced out to a 9-4 advantage in game three, the Highlanders responded with a 6-1 run capped off by five kills and a block to tie the set 10-10. Following an Elon timeout, the two teams traded points to find themselves tied 22-22, before the Phoenix closed the game and match with three straight points.

Despite dropping game three, Radford finished the frame with 19 kills including seven from McWhorter.

After opening with a .000 hitting percentage in game one, Radford finished with a .224 mark while Elon hit .273.

The Highlanders will hit the road Saturday for a 3 p.m. matchup against conference-foe UNC Asheville.
