RADFORD, Va. – Led by junior
Megan McWhorter's season-high 17 kills and 12 digs, the Radford volleyball team defeated Coastal Carolina, 3-1, as they honored their seniors on Friday night at the Dedmon Center.
The victory lifts the Highlanders 11-20 and 5-11 in the Big South, while the Chanticleers fall to 14-16 and 7-8 in the league.
In addition to McWhorter's double-figures, senior
Laura Waddell recorded 10 kills, while
Desiree Aramburu led all setters with 39 assists.
Katelyn Meeks led the Highlanders with 24 digs, defensively, while
Kiley Kent matched her season-best with four service aces.
As a team, Coastal connected on 53 of its swings with a .176 hitting percentage, while Radford put down 49 kills on a .137 hitting percentage and recorded 10 total blocks.
The Chanticleers had three attackers in double-figure kills as Chelsy Kimes led the way with 13 and 21 digs.
Tied 14-14 in the opening game, Radford broke the deadlock with a pair of kills and a service ace from Kent to go in front for good. The Highlanders stretched their lead to as many as five before taking game one 25-23.
After the two clubs traded points early in game two, Radford broke the set open with a 7-2 run and never looked back.
Coastal scored three of the last four points in the third game to force a fourth set with a 25-23 win.
Trailing by as many as four on several occasions in the final game, Radford knotted the game 21-21 before closing on a 4-2 spurt to secure the win.
The Highlanders will travel to Rock Hill, S.C. for the 2010 Big South Volleyball Tournament Nov. 18-20 hosted by Winthrop. Coastal Carolina will conclude its regular season at High Point Saturday.
