Pregame Notes
-- After a pair of season-opening wins last weekend, Radford will play the first of three straight away from home Friday at South Carolina.
-- The Highlanders began their 2010-11 campaign with a 57-54 victory over Emory & Henry (11/13) before defeating Methodist the following day, 83-74, to improve to 2-0 for the 13th time in school history and third under head coach
Brad Greenberg.
--
Tommy Spagnolo (West Jefferson, N.C.Ashe County), who made his collegiate debut last weekend, leads Radford in scoring at 14.5 points per game, while shooting 72.2 percent from the floor. The red-shirt freshman was one of six Highlanders to hit double figures in their last outing. In addition to his 15-point performance against the Monarchs, Spagnolo grabbed 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.
--
Gorkem Sonmez (Istanbul, TurkeySt. Mary's Ryken) (10.5 ppg) is also averaging double figures for the Highlanders, while
Jamal Curry (9.5 rpg) leads them in rebounding.
-- Radford is looking to begin a season 3-0 for the first time since the 2003-04 season.
-- Radford is 1-7 all-time against the SEC, with its lone win coming at LSU (73-72) on Dec. 30, 1993.
-- In the last meeting, which was during Greenberg's first season at the helm, Radford fell to South Carolina 90-63 on Jan. 2, 2008.
-- Despite the setback, RU trailed by just five (54-49) with less than 15 minutes to play and placed three in double figures (Martell McDuffy - 19, Kenny Thomas - 17,
Joey Lynch-Flohr - 17).
Scouting the Gamecocks
-- South Carolina enters the third all-time meeting 1-1 after falling at No. 2 Michigan State, 82-73, Tuesday.
-- Despite the setback, the Gamecocks outrebounded Michigan State, 44-41, including 21 offensive rebounds.
-- Through two contests, freshman Bruce Ellington leads South Carolina in scoring at 15 points per contest, while averaging 6 assists. Sam Muldrow (12.5), Malik Cooke (11.0) and Brian Richardson (10.5) are also contributing double figures.
-- One of the Gamecocks strengths through two games is their depth, as nine players are playing more than 10 minutes per contest.
-- South Carolina finished its second season (2009-10) under Darrin Horn 21-10 overall and 6-10 in the Southeastern Conference.
-- South Carolina owns a 32-7 (.820) all-time mark against schools in the Big South Conference, including a 28-4 (.875) mark in home contests.
-- Like Radford, the Gamecocks are very young as their seven newcomers (six freshmen) are averaging a combined 45.5 points per game.
