BOX SCORE
RADFORD, Va. – Radford fell to in-state foe James Madison, 78-57, in non-conference men's basketball action Saturday evening at the Dedmon Center.
The Dukes' Alioune Diouf led all players with a career-high 19 points, including four of his clubs' 11 buckets from long range. Julius Wells also hit the 10-point plateau for JMU.
Thanks to six early 3-pointers and a lengthy Highlander scoring drought, James Madison (7-3) raced out to a 26-8 advantage.
“We weren't active or aggressive enough at either end of the floor in the first half,” said Radford head coach Brad Greenberg. “They got too many open 3-pointers and offensive rebounds.”
After going almost 17 minutes at Virginia on Tuesday evening without a field goal, Radford (2-7) went 8:07 between baskets tonight allowing the Dukes to open the contest on a 16-3 run.
James Madison, which held the Highlanders to just 20.8 percent (5-of-24) in the first half, led 37-20 at the break.
Blake Smith (Charlotte, N.C./United Faith Christian Academy) was the lone Highlander in double figures with 12 points in 17 minutes off the bench.
“Tommy [Spagnolo] was active on the glass and Blake had some good moments,” said Greenberg.
The Dukes began the second half on a 13-3 spurt before stretching their lead to as many as 30.
Led by Rayshawn Goins' 13, James Madison finished with a 48-32 advantage on the glass, including 18 on the offensive end, which led to 20 second-chance points.
Both teams charted seven blocks.
“We need to drive the ball and get to the foul line like we did in the second half,” Greenberg added.
Radford finished the contest 21-of-31 from the charity stripe.
After a seven-day break for exams, the Highlanders will play four of their next five on the road beginning with a Dec. 18 contest at UNC Wilmington.
“We'll take a couple days off for final exams and come back refreshed and keep working hard,” Greenberg said.
