RADFORD, Va. – Behind
Tolga Cerrah's (Ankara, Turkey) first career double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds), Radford cruised by Dickinson 86-59 in non-conference men's basketball action Wednesday afternoon at the Dedmon Center.
“I'm happy for the players,” said Radford head coach Brad Greenberg. “It's been a tough stretch between wins. They've been resilient and have stayed together.”
Blake Smith (Charlotte, N.C./United Faith Christian Academy) added 16 points to go along with five takeaways and
Gorkem Sonmez (Istanbul, Turkey) poured in 14 points for Radford (3-9). Senior
Jeremy Robinson (Baltimore, Md./Tallahassee Community College) also tallied five steals for the Highlanders, who recorded their first win in 45 days.
Radford, which shot 53.8 percent and forced 19 turnovers in the first half, used an 18-5 run to grab a 31-17 lead with 4:35 left in the period. After Dickinson (5-6) cut the deficit to six (34-28), the Highlanders closed the half on a 12-1 spurt to take a 46-29 advantage into the break.
In addition to converting 13 steals into 26 points in the opening stanza, Radford recorded 24 points in the paint, while going to the line 24 times.
The Highlanders pushed the margin to as many as 33 in the second half en route to their highest offensive output of the season.
For the second straight outing Radford shot 50 percent (26-52) from the floor while going 31-for-43 (.721) at the line.
Matt Dolan finished with 17 points for the Red Devils, who shot just 37.8 percent (17-45) and committed 28 turnovers.
The Highlanders controlled the glass 40-26 and turned 17 offensive rebounds into 22 points. Radford also scored 42 points in the paint and 39 off Dickinson turnovers.
The two clubs combined for 28 steals (Radford – 16, Dickinson – 12).
“We've improved and need to keep getting better as we head into our league schedule,” Greenberg said.
Radford will resume conference play Friday at Coastal Carolina (2 p.m.) before concluding its trip to the Palmetto State with Charleston Southern Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
