RUTV: GARDNER-WEBB HOLDS OFF RADFORD, 59-52

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va. – Despite a season-high 13 points and nine rebounds from Johnathan Edwards (Queens, N.Y./Tyler JUCO), Radford fell to Gardner-Webb, 59-52, in Big South action Saturday evening at the Dedmon Center.

Edwards finished 6-of-9 from the floor for his third double figure effort of the year, while Jeremy Robinson (Baltimore, Md./Tallahassee C.C.) contributed nine points and five assists in 32 minutes off the bench for the Highlanders.

“Johnathan had his strongest all-around game and Jeremy provided a nice first-half spark,” commented Highlander head coach Brad Greenberg.
HIGHLIGHTS: Gardner-Webb at Radford

Jon Moore led three Gardner-Webb (6-4, 1-1 Big South) players in double figures with 18 points. Stefon Johnson added 12 and John Henley had 10.

Radford (2-5, 0-2), which shot 50 percent in the opening period, led by as many as seven (24-17) following a Jareal Smith (Savannah, Ga./Johnson) jumper, before taking a 28-24 lead into the half.

After recording just 14 field goals in their contest with UNC Asheville Thursday, the Highlanders went 13-of-26 from the floor in the first half, while holding Gardner-Webb to just 39 percent in the first 20 minutes of action.

“We played our best defensive game of the year, especially in the first half,” Greenberg said.

Gardner-Webb scored the first nine points of the second half and stretched their advantage to 44-38 with 8:29 to play.

The Highlanders responded with 10 unanswered of their own, capped off by a Gorkem Sonmez (Istanbul, Turkey) triple and a pair of Robinson free throws to go back in front, 46-44 at the 5:19 mark.

Following Radford's spurt, the two teams traded buckets to find themselves deadlocked at 50-50, until Moore's trey from the right wing with 1:29 left put the Bulldogs up for good.

As a team, the Highlanders shot just 16.7 percent from behind the arc and made only eight of their 18 attempts (.444) from the charity stripe.

“We struggled shooting from the outside and at the line, which was the difference in the game.”

Despite the loss, Radford held a 39-31 advantage on the glass.

The Highlanders will travel to Charlottesville Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip with Virginia. Gardner-Webb continues its 10-game stretch away from home Dec. 7 at Elon.
