WOMEN'S HOOPS FALLS AT VIRGINIA

Box Score

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –
Radford fell at Virginia 76-52, Monday evening from John Paul Jones Arena. The Highlanders (2-5) battled with the Cavaliers (6-4), getting within two points early in the second half, but a 16-2 run by Virginia broke open the game and secured the victory.

The Highlanders put three players in double figures led by senior Denay Wood with 13 points. Sophomore Da'Naria Erwin Spencer and red-shirt junior Erica Rivera chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

UVa's Lexi Gerson led all scorers with 19 points to go along with five assists and four steals. Chelsea Shine added 12 points, all in the second half for the Cavaliers.

Radford overcame a sloppy start and poor shooting to go into the half down just 32-25. The Highlanders, who turned the ball over 15 times, fell behind by as much as 10, but behind an aggressive defensive effort and a small run, Radford went into the break down just seven.

After the teams traded buckets in the opening minutes, Virginia used a 10-1 run to grab a 12-3 lead at 12:18. The Highlanders, who committed 10 of those turnovers in the first 10 minutes, were able to stay in the game with an aggressive defensive effort and used an 8-2 spurt to cut the Cavaliers' lead to 20-16 at 5:20.

Wood's second triple and Radford's third to start the second half cut UVa's lead to just two (38-36) at 15:32, the closest deficit for the Highlanders since 17:07 of the first half.

After forcing a Virginia turnover on the next possession, Radford had a chance to tie. After that opportunity went awry, UVa used the 16-2 run over the next minutes to take a commanding 54-38 with 8:43 on the clock. During that run, the Highlanders went without a field for almost five minutes.

Radford finished the contest shooting 33 percent from the field and recorded 14 steals on the defensive end led by Wood and Erwin Spencer with four and three, respectively. Virginia shot 47 percent from the floor and won the turnover battle (26-19). Both teams took advantage of the turnovers as the Wahoos scored 30 points and Radford 20 points of their opponent's miscues.

Radford returns home on Thursday, Nov. 9 when it host Southern Virginia at 7 p.m.
