RUTV: VIRGINIA HOLDS OFF RADFORD IN OFFENSIVE STRUGGLE, 54-44

BOX SCORE

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –
Despite holding Virginia to just 27.7 percent shooting, including 4-of-24 (.167) in the second half, Radford fell to the Cavaliers, 54-44, Tuesday evening at John Paul Jones Arena.

“That's the best we've played as far as being disciplined on both ends of the floor,” said Radford head coach Brad Greenberg.

Though the Highlanders were held scoreless for almost 15 minutes and went without a bucket for 16:56, they limited Virginia (6-3) to just one field goal over a 13-minute span and cut what was an 18-point deficit (37-19), to 10 on a Tolga Cerrah (Ankara, Turkey) three-point play with 7:52 to play.

“Our guys showed some spirit tonight, which was good to see.”
GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Radford at Virginia

After Virginia stretched the margin back to 14, Radford (2-6) got to within 10 on several occasions, but that's as close as it would get.

“We had a couple plays where we got good shots, they just didn't fall,” Greenberg said.

The Cavaliers, who finished with their worst shooting percentage in five years, drilled 20-of-24 attempts from the charity stripe.

Gorkem Sonmez (Istanbul, Turkey) led Radford with a game-high 15 points, while grabbing a career-high six boards.

Virginia's Mike Scott, who was named the ACC Player of the Week Monday, finished with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for his fifth straight double-double and 24th of his career.

Mustapha Farrakhan (14), Joe Harris (14) and K.T. Harrell (13) also contributed double figures for Virginia.

Both Scott and Farrakhan finished the evening 8-of-8 at the line.

Evan Faulkner
's (Sandy Hook, Ky./Elliott County) three put the Highlanders up 19-15 with 7:34 to go in the opening half, but Virginia closed the period on a 17-0 run to take a 32-19 lead into the break.

The Cavaliers knocked down six treys in the first half, including three from Harrell, who made all five of his attempts from the floor and led all players at intermission with 13 points.

The Highlanders shot just 39 percent from the floor, but managed a 40 percent clip from behind the arc.

Radford returns home for a 7 p.m. tip with in-state foe James Madison Saturday evening at the Dedmon Center.
