RADFORD, Va. – Radford closes out a stretch of six games in 13 days with a Tuesday night Big South men's basketball contest at VMI's Cameron Hall.
Following a 92-84 loss at UNC Asheville on Sunday afternoon in a game postponed from Saturday, the Highlanders (11-10, 7-4 Big South) find themselves in a three-way tie for second place and two games behind conference-leading Coastal Carolina (9-2). Radford, UNC Asheville and Winthrop are all tied for the second spot in the Big South standings, as the second round of league play began on Thursday night.
VMI (7-13, 2-8) is just a half game out of last place, ahead of Presbyterian.
Radford continued its recent string of success against VMI on Jan. 21, a 109-91 win over the Keydets at the Dedmon Center. The Highlanders have won eight of the last 10 games in the series and have a 10-4 record against the Keydets (regular season and tournament) since VMI joined the Big South in 2003-04.
In the last meeting between the two teams, 13 days ago, three Radford players –
Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus),
Laz Trifunovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and
Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax)– posted double-doubles. The Highlanders had their largest scoring output since 114 against the Keydets on Feb. 14, 2006. Radford shot 58 percent from the field for the game (45 of 78), including 61 percent in the second half.
The Highlanders will try and rebound against the Keydets, losers of seven of their last eight Big South games, on Tuesday night. On Sunday, UNC Asheville, winners of seven straight, snapped a five-game losing streak to Radford. Matt Dickey scored 26 points and UNC Asheville went 27-for-34 at the free throw line and shot 60 percent in the second half.
For the third straight outing Radford also placed five in double digits, led by
Amir Johnson's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley) season-high 18 points on 7-for-14 shooting. The 5-foot-9 point guard also added six assists and five rebounds.
Parakhouski and Lynch-Flohr recorded double-doubles, scoring 12 each and grabbing 15 and 12 rebounds, respectively. Radford was 6-0 this season in games where two or more players posted a double-double, falling for the first time in a game with multiple double-doubles since a 101-58 loss to North Carolina in the 2009 NCAA Tournament first round.
VMI, the nation's highest scoring team at 89.8 points per game, fell 91-78 at Liberty on Thursday night. After VMI went up 20-17 with 11:36 to play before halftime, five different players scored for Liberty to spark a 12-4 run and the Flames never trailed again. The Flames led by five at halftime and outscored the Keydets 49-36 in the second.
Keith Gabriel, who scored 16 in his last outing against Radford, scored 24 points for the Keydets, who had their longest winning streak of the season snapped at two games.
