Men's Basketball Holds Off Charleston Southern, 61-58, in Overtime

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va. – Joey Lynch-Flohr
(Fairfax, Va. / Fairfax) scored 24 points, Radford held Charleston Southern scoreless in overtime, and the Highlanders pulled out a 61-58 win at the Dedmon Center on Thursday night.

Lynch-Flohr went 10-for-16 from the field for Radford (14-10, 10-4 Big South) and had the Highlanders' only field goal of overtime, which came 37 seconds in.

After the Buccaneers (11-13, 6-8) scored on each of their final five possessions in regulation, sending the game to overtime on Jamarco Warren's basket in the paint with 3 seconds left, Charleston Southern went scoreless in the extra session.

“We played good defense tonight,” head coach Brad Greenberg said.  “In the last minute and a half they scored 10 points, but other than that, we guarded really well.  You look at 43 minutes of this game and we really played good defense.”

In overtime, Radford only needed Lynch-Flohr's jumper and Phillip Martin's (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic) free throw at the 4:04 mark to seal the win.

Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) added 15 points and 14 rebounds for his 20th double-double of the season, and Blake Smith (Charlotte, N.C./United Faith Christian) added 10 points for Radford.

Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley) finished with eight assists and is four shy of breaking the Big South conference's all-time record of 567.

“Tonight, it didn't feel like there were many open shots outside and we just wanted to pound the ball inside,” Johnson said.  “We wanted to get Art and Joey going, and Joey was a workhorse tonight and kept us in the game in the first half.”

Warren finished with 13 points while Kenny Mitchell led the Buccaneers with 19 points on 9-for-11 shooting.  Kelvin Martin pulled in 11 rebounds for Charleston Southern.

Charleston Southern hit 39.1 percent of its shots for the game and had just four free throw opportunities, making three.

Radford shot 52.2 percent in the second half (12-for-23) and finished the game shooting 41.8 percent.   The Highlanders made just 13 of their 28 free throw attempts.

After Charleston Southern ran off eight unanswered points to grab its largest lead, 24-17, with just over five minutes left in the first half, the Highlanders outscored the Buccaneers 8-2 to close out the period and trailed 26-25 at halftime.

Behind 31-25 following five straight points from the Buccaneers to open the second half, Radford outscored CSU 19-4 over the next 6:19, highlighted by nine points from Lynch-Flohr, to take a 44-35 lead at the 12:36 mark.

Jeremy Sexton's 3-pointer with 4:51 remaining pulled Charleston Southern to within one, 49-48, before Gorkem Sonmez (Istanbul, Turkey) answered with a 3-pointer to extend the lead and start a run of six straight points, putting the Highlanders ahead 55-48 with 2:20 left.

After Parakhouski's basket with 33 seconds left gave Radford a three-point lead, Sexton went to the other end and scored with 11 seconds left to bring the Buccaneers to within a point, 57-56.

Radford hosts Coastal Carolina in a 7 p.m. tip on Saturday night, closing out a three-game homestand.
