HIGH POINT, N.C. – Despite a career-high 24 points each from
Kymesha Alston (Hampton, Va./Manhattan) and
Da'Naria Erwin Spencer (Charlotte, N.C./East Mecklenburg), Radford fell at High Point, 88-74, Monday evening from the Millis Center.
Alston was 11-for-18 from the field and pulled down seven rebounds, while Erwin Spencer was 7-for-17 from the floor and a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. She also registered six rebounds, a team-best four steals and three assists.
Freshman
Ashley Buckhannon (Wytheville, Va./George Wythe) was in double figures as well for the Highlanders (5-17, 4-7 Big South) with 10 points.
High Point's LaTeisha Dean led five Panthers (14-11, 7-5) in double figures with 20 points to go along with five rebounds three assists and three steals. Jurica Hargraves and Frances Fields chipped in with 15 and 12 points with Shamia Brown and Ashlee' Samuels adding 10 apiece.
Radford hit its first four shots and five of six, racing out to a 10-3 lead in the first 3:42 of the contest. After a 7-0 spurt by the Panthers tied the game at 10-all, the Highlanders hit their next two shots to reestablish their lead at 14-10.
A Laura Whitt layup capped off a 12-1 run, giving High Point its largest lead of the half (22-15) at the 11:12 mark.
The Highlanders battled back to within one (24-23) at 7:16 when Buckhannon canned a three-pointer at the end of an 8-2 spurt and remained within striking distance the rest of the half as High Point took a 42-39 lead into the lockerroom.
The Highlanders stayed within striking distance due in large part to 53 percent shooting and 12 points apiece from Erwin Spencer and Alston.
The Panthers were paced by Dean's nine points. They shot 40 percent from the field and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe.
A 10-3 spurt to start the second half gave High Point the first double-digit lead of the game (52-42) at 16:36.
Behind an 11-0 run, Radford took its first lead since the 13:10 mark of the first half when Erwin Spencer made it 57-56 on a mid-range jumper at the 10:53 mark.
Dean answered on High Point's next possession with her second triple of the contest, which sparked a 7-0 spurt over the next minute to put the Panthers back up 63-57.
Radford was unable to get High Point's lead under four the rest of the contest as the Panthers pulled away in the final minutes for the victory.
Radford shot 42.6 percent from the field and 57 percent (4-7) from long range. However, outside of Erwin Spencer, the Highlanders struggled from the free throw line, going just 12-for-21 (57.1 percent).
High Point won the battle on the boards, 45-42 led by Samuels and Brown with nine and eight. Freshman
Victoria Hamilton (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands/Antilles School) pulled down a team-best eight caroms for the Highlanders.
Radford returns home on Saturday, Feb. 20 hosting Charleston Southern for its Think Pink contest at 3 p.m. It will also be senior day, where the Highlanders honor their lone senior
Kymesha Alston in a pregame ceremony.
