BOX SCORE
LYNCHBURG, Va. -
Art Parakhouski (Minsk Belarus) scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, Radford rallied from a late second half deficit, and the Highlanders picked up a 74-69 win over the Flames on Tuesday night.
Parakhouski, who connected on 9 of 15 shots, had 14 first-half points for Radford (15-11, 11-5 Big South) on the way to his 21st double-double of the season.
In the second half, Radford built its largest lead of the game, a 49-41 lead with 14:26 left, before a 17-5 run put the Flames (13-14, 8-7) back ahead, 58-54, with 6:36 remaining.
The Highlanders responded with 11 straight points to take back control, including
Blake Smith's (Charlotte, N.C./United Faith Christian) 3-pointer with 5:26 left that put Radford back out in front to stay.
Radford made eight of its final 10 attempts at the free throw line, but finished just 59.4 percent (19 of 32) for the game. Liberty made 55 percent (11 of 20) of its free throw tries.
“We played better defense later in the game and we've done a better job guarding the 3-pointer recently,” head coach Brad Greenberg said. “Our guys did a good job making free throws down the stretch, Art established himself inside, and we rebounded the basketball well.”
Laz Trifunovic (Belgrade, Serbia) scored 13 points and
Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) had 10 for the Highlanders, who shot 52 percent (26 of 50) from the field. Of Radford's 26 made field goals, 23 were assisted, including eight from
Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley).
Patrick Konan, who scored 14 first half points for Liberty, had just two in the second half to finish with 16. Evan Gordon led the Flames with 17 points and Jesse Sanders added 11. Liberty made 44.6 percent of its shots (25 of 56) and connected on eight 3-pointers.
After Konan's 3-pointer with four seconds left in the first half gave Liberty a 35-33 lead at intermission, Radford scored five straight points to open up the second half, taking a 37-35 lead on Parakhouski's three-point play 59 seconds in, part of a 12-4 run to open the second half.
Radford shot 57 percent in the second half (12 of 21), while holding Liberty to just 36.7 percent (11 of 30).
“Tonight was a good road win against a team that already had eight league wins,” Greenberg said. “Liberty's playing well and they posed some matchup problems for us, being a smaller team. We have to keep working at playing against teams that are like Liberty."
Dating back to last season, the Highlanders have won 15 of their last 18 league road games.
“We're trying to put ourselves in the best possible position we can be in. Our guys want to keep winning, and you never know what might happen.”
Radford returns home for its final three games, hosting UNC Wilmington in an ESPNU Bracketbusters game on Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.
