Wasmer Shoots Charleston Southern Past Women's Basketball

RADFORD, Va. –
Kelsey Wasmer scored a career-high 33 points and Charleston Southern shot 61.3 percent in the second half as the Buccaneers defeated Radford 84-78 in Big South women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Dedmon Center.

Coming off a 26-point performance in her last outing, Wasmer finished 12-for-19 from the floor, including 5 of 9 from behind the arc. Katie Tull added 11 points and a game-high six assists for the Bucs, who won their fourth straight.

Along with going 19-for-31 in the second half, eight of Charleston Southern's 11 buckets from downtown came in the second stanza.

Charleston Southern (15-10, 7-5 Big South), which shot just 39 percent in the first half, began the second half on a 15-4 run and never looked back.

The Buccaneers connected on 14 of their first 22 attempts in the final frame and stretched their lead to double digits on several occasions, including twice on Wasmer threes.

Radford (5-18, 4-8 Big South) cut the deficit to four, 77-73, with just over a minute to play, but Wasmer extended the margin back to seven with her fifth triple of the contest.

Jewell Kinlaw (Madison, Ala./ Bob Jones) paced four Highlanders in double figures with a career-high 15 points.

Kaylyn Crosier (South Charleston, W.Va./South Charleston) matched her personal best with 13, while Katherine Brockett (Geelong, Australia) and Da'Naria Erwin Spencer (Charlotte, N.C./East Mecklenburg) scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. It was a career-best for Brockett.

After Radford used a 15-2 run highlighted by four Kinlaw layups to go in front 21-10, Charleston Southern responded with a 19-6 streak to go back in front, 29-27, with just over three minutes remaining in the first half.

Trailing 34-31 following a 3-pointer from Wasmer, who led all players at the break with 15 points, the Highlanders scored four straight to close the half, including a Brockett trey that put her club up 35-34 at intermission.

Along with shooting 52 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes of action, Radford forced 11 turnovers, which resulted in 12 points at the other end.

Radford's lone senior Kymesha Alston (Hampton, Va./Manhattan) was honored with a ceremony prior to the tip. Alston, playing in her 100th collegiate game, finished with nine points, all in the second half, and five rebounds.

Radford will conclude its 2009-10 home slate Monday evening when it hosts Coastal Carolina in a 7 p.m. tip at the Dedmon Center. Charleston Southern heads to Liberty for a 7 p.m. contest at the Vines Center on Monday night.
