First Half Run Propels Coastal Carolina over Women's Basketball

RADFORD, Va. – A 16-3 first half run and three players in double figures keyed Coastal Carolina in a 62-50 victory over Radford, Monday evening from the Dedmon Center.

Sydnei Moss led all scorers with 17 points to go along with nine rebounds. Devin Rivers added a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double and Kendra Reynolds added 14 for the Chanticleers (15-10, 6-7 Big South). River also registered a game-high four steals.

Kymesha Alston (Hampton, Va./Manhattan) recorded her third double-double of the season for the Highlanders (5-19, 4-9) with 10 points and a game-best 12 rebounds. Freshman Da'Naria Erwin Spencer (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Highlanders with 11 points.

Coastal Carolina used its 16-3 run to erase a four-point first half deficit and take a 30-23 lead into halftime. Moss paced the Chanticleers with a half-high eight points. Alston led the Highlanders with seven points and seven rebounds.

After the Chanticleers took an early 9-4 lead, the Highlanders responded with a 12-2 run, highlighted by back-to-back layups from Kahealani Vick (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) and Ashley Buckhannon (Wytheville, Va./George Wythe) to take a 16-12 advantage at the 11:07 mark.

Olivia Irick jumpstarted the Chanticleer game changing run with a triple at 9:55 and Rivers capped it off with an 18-foot jumper at 3:14, giving them a 28-19 lead.

Vick ended the run and Radford's field goal drought (9:55) with a bucket at the 1:48 mark. Following two Moss freebees, Erwin Spencer canned a 19-foot jumper at the buzzer getting the Highlanders within seven at intermission.

Behind a quick 6-0 spurt, Coastal Carolina extended its lead to 13 at the 15:11 mark of the second half.

Radford countered with an 8-1 run, capped off by freshman Katherine Brockett's (Geelong, Australia/Kardinia International College) drive and bucket at 8:43, to get within six points (41-35).

The Chanticleers scored five straight points to push their lead back to double figures. After Radford cut it to nine on the next possession, Reynolds hit a short jumper extending Coastal Carolina's lead back to 11 and it would maintain a double-figure advantage over the final five minutes.

Brockett a classmate Victoria Hamilton (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands/Antilles School) chipped in with six points and five rebounds apiece for the Highlanders.

Amanda Stull contributed eight points with a game-high five assists and two blocks for the Chanticleers.

Radford hits the road for its next contest at Presbyterian on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m. The Chanticleers remain on the road with their next contest at Winthrop on Monday, March 1 at 7 p.m.
