Women's Hoops Set To Host First Place Gardner-Webb on Wednesday Night

RADFORD, Va. --
Coming off an eight-day layoff and a 63-45 defeat against a red-hot Liberty team, it doesn't get any easier when Radford women's basketball hosts first-place Gardner-Webb, the hottest team in the Big South, on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Game Notes | Live Audio

This game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 6, but because of another snowstorm in the Radford the game was rescheduled for Feb. 10. With this, the Highlanders have not stepped on the court for a game since their Feb. 1 tilt against the Lady Flames.

When the teams meet on Wednesday, the Highlanders are looking to snap a three-game skid, while the Runnin' Bulldogs, receiving votes (13) in the USA Today ESPN Division I Coaches' poll for the second time this season, try to extend a seven-game winning streak, the longest in the Big South. Gardner-Webb is coming off a come-from-behind, 59-56 victory at Liberty on Monday night to take sole possession of first place.

Radford and Gardner-Webb are deadlocked at three-all when they face off for the seventh time in this series. The Highlanders stunned the Bulldogs, 68-53, in the conference opener for Radford. At the time of the win, Gardner-Webb was receiving votes in the national poll. It still is the only blemish on the Bulldogs' conference schedule.

In the first meeting of the season, Radford used overall team effort and a career-high 18 points from freshman Da'Naria Erwin Spencer (Charlotte, N.C./East Mecklenburg), to defeat a red-hot Gardner-Webb team, 68-53 in its Big South opener on Jan. 4 at Paul Porter Arena.

Following a furious comeback by Gardner-Webb to tie the score at 45-45, Radford closed out the final 7:30 of the game with a 23-8 run to win its sixth straight conference opener and 18th overall.

The Bulldogs entered that contest winners of five straight and 12 of its last 13. But for the second straight season, Radford defeated the Bulldogs in its league opener. The victory also snapped the Bulldogs' eight-game home winning streak and the Highlanders' five-game slide.

Erwin Spencer hit 5-of-9 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line, all coming in the second half. She also recorded five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Freshman Ashley Buckhannon (Wytheville, Va./George Wythe), who was 3-for-4 on three-pointers, added 13 points, three assists and a team-high three steals.

In Radford's last game on Feb. 1, Liberty defeated the Highlanders 63-45 from the Dedmon Center. Devon Brown finished with a game-high 20 points for the Lady Flames and 11 rebounds hitting 6-of-12 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Kylee Beecher was a rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine boards. Erwin Spencer led Radford with 10 points.

Gardner-Webb enters tonight's contest riding a seven-game winning streak, after defeating Liberty on the road Monday night in a battle for first place.

The Bulldogs have four players averaging double figures led by Margaret Rountree's 11.5 points per game. Courtney Epps (11.2) is the top shooting Bulldog at 51.8 percent, including 43.8 percent from long range. As a team, GWU is the top scoring (69.0) and the second best defensive squad (55.4 ppg) in the conference. They are also tops in three-point percentage (39.3 percent) and second in the shooting, free throw shooting, field goal defense and blocked shots.

Radford returns to action Saturday, Feb. 13 when it travels to Winthrop for a 7 p.m. contest.
