ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Lindsey Thompson drained a three with 1.7 seconds in regulation and then UNC Asheville out scored Radford, 12-5 in overtime to earn a 75-68 victory over the Highlanders, Monday evening from the Justice Center.
Thompson, along with Kendall Shepard netted a team-high 15 points for the Bulldogs (8-20, 3-12 Big South) who snapped a three-game slide with the victory.
Ashley Buckhannon (Wytheville, Va./George Wythe) came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points for the Highlanders (6-20, 5-10), hitting 5-of-9 three pointers. She also dished out a team-best five assists.
Victoria Hamilton (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Island/Antilles School) and
Kymesha Alston (Hampton, Va./Manhattan) each recorded a double-double for the Highlanders.
Hamilton pulled down a game and career-high 13 boards and chipped in with 10 points and four assists. Alston finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds and a game-best four steals.
Radford, which had rallied from a six-point deficit with a 14-3 run, had a chance to secure the win in regulation, but hit just one-of-four free throws down the stretch, setting up Thompson's game-tying triple.
In the overtime, UNC Asheville scored the first five points and did not look back. The Highlanders' free throw woes continued into the extra period as they were just 1-for-6 and finished 9-for-22 (41 percent) for the game.
Radford, which scored 14 points off of 15 UNCA turnovers, took a 36-33 lead into the lockerroom. The Highlanders recorded eight steals in the half and were led by a combined 17 points from Buckhannon and Alston.
Buckhannon's early three-point accuracy (3-for-4) helped Radford race out to a 13-4 lead at the 13:41 mark. The Highlanders would hit four of their first six trifectas and 5-of-11 (45.5 percent) in the first half.
A 19-8 run by the Bulldogs over the next 7:22 knotted the game at 21-21, but a
Katherine Brockett (Geelong, Australia) triple, her second of the half, kickstarted an 11-2 spurt pushing Radford's lead to 32-23 with 2:47 remaining.
UNCA closed out the final 1:56 of half with a 10-4 spurt, capped off by Shepard's jumper with two ticks on the clock getting the Bulldogs within three at the break. Shepard led the Bulldogs with seven first half points.
Trailing 54-48, Radford used its 14-3 run to take a 62-57 lead with 1:33 left in regulation. The run was highlighted by Alston's three-point play that put the Highlanders in the lead (57-56).
The Highlanders wrap up their regular season on Friday, March 5 at Liberty. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
