VOLLEYBALL CAPTURES DEPAUL INVITE TITLE WITH 3-2 WIN OVER BLUE DEMONS

BOX SCORE

CHICAGO, Ill. – On the heels of sweeping Georgia State earlier in the day, Radford concluded the DePaul Invitational with a 3-2 (25-22, 17-25, 23-25, 25-16, 16-14) come-from-behind victory over the host Blue Demons Friday evening to finish its trip to the Windy City perfect.

For the second time in as many contests and fourth time this season, freshman Emily Carlin recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs to lead the Highlanders, who improved to 5-5 overall with their fourth straight win.

To go along with the freshman's outstanding performance, sophomore Desiree Aramburu charted 49 assists and 10 digs for her second straight double-double, while junior Megan McWhorter also tallied double-figures with 16 kills (.325).

Senior Kiley Kent charted a season-high 16 digs, while freshman Storm Melnick picked up 21 digs.

The Highlanders connected on .250 of their swings, including five kills from McWhorter (.444) to take the opening game, 25-22.

In game two, DePaul raced out to a 10-1 advantage and never looked back.

After falling behind 11-1 in the third, Radford chipped away at the deficit and cut it to one, 23-22, but the Blue Demons held on late to take a two games to one lead. As a team, DePaul tallied a .240 hitting percentage, while holding the Highlanders to a .170 clip in the third.

Tied 7-7 in the fourth set, the Highlanders responded with a 12-2 run to put the game out of reach and force a fifth and decisive game.

In the deciding frame, Radford connected on .300 of its swings en route to a 16-14 win.

For their efforts this weekend, Carlin was named MVP, while Aramburu and McWhorter received All-Tournament honors.

The Highlanders will travel to Charleston, S.C., to take on Central Michigan Thursday, Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m.
