RADFORD SWEEPS NORFOLK STATE ON DAY ONE OF RU TOURNAMENT

RADFORD, Va.
– Senior Laura Waddell charted a season-high 12 kills to lead Radford to a 3-0 victory over Norfolk State on day one of the 2010 RU Volleyball Tournament Friday evening at the Dedmon Center.

The Highlanders, who picked up their first win of the season, improved to 1-4, while Norfolk State fell to 3-3.

In addition to Waddell's 46th career double-figure performance and .579 clip, Radford found the floor with .361 of its swings.

Carly Fleming and Emily Carlin added seven kills each for the Highlanders, while Carlin led the club with 11 digs. Sophomore Desiree Aramburu set up a match-high 28 kills.

In the opener, Radford jumped out to a 9-3 advantage and stretched the lead to as many as eight on several occasions before Waddell put the game away with her third kill of the frame.

The second set featured 17 ties and four lead changes before Radford closed on a 7-2 spurt to head into the locker room up two games to none.

Waddell saved her best for last, compiling six of Radford's 17 kills in the final game and a .857 hitting percentage.

As a team, the Highlanders finished with seven total blocks, five of which came from the final game, including four block assists from senior Caroline Ratterree.

Despite the loss, Norfolk State's Arielle Knafel recorded a match-high 14 kills, while Noelle Eagles picked up 14 digs.

The Highlanders return to the court Saturday at 3 p.m. to take on Davidson before concluding the second annual event with a match against Canisius at 7 p.m.
