VOLLEYBALL CLOSES OUT TOURNAMENT WITH 3-0 WIN OVER CANISIUS

RADFORD FALLS TO DAVIDSON, 3-0

RADFORD, Va.
– Radford fell to Davidson, 3-0, on day two of the RU Volleyball Tournament, Saturday afternoon at the Dedmon Center.

As a team, Davidson (4-2) recorded 40 kills with a .208 hitting percentage, while the Highlanders (1-5) struggled hitting the floor by charting only 23 kills.

Freshman Emily Carlin led Radford with seven kills, eight digs and four total blocks, while sophomore Desiree Aramburu added 16 assists and two total blocks.

Defensive specialists, Katelyn Meeks and Storm Melnick also recorded double-figure digs for the Highlanders with 14 and 13, respectively.

Sarabeth Peele led the Wildcats, tallying 10 kills (.300), while Ariel Ley and Hayley Lawson both charted double-figure assists with 19 and 15, respectively.

RADFORD CRUISES BY CANISIUS, 3-0

RADFORD, Va. –
Emily Carlin and Megan McWhorter recorded 10 kills each as the Highlanders cruised by Canisius, 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-21) in the final game of the 2010 Radford Volleyball Tournament Saturday evening at the Dedmon Center.

With the win, Radford improves to 2-5, while Canisius falls to 2-5.

In addition to the outside hitters' impressive performances, Radford freshman Storm Melnick added a match-high of 10 digs and sophomore Desiree Aramburu finished with 35 assists and nine digs of her own.

As a team, Radford finished with a .348 hitting percentage, while holding Canisius to a .122 clip.

To go along with their attack numbers, the Highlanders charted seven total blocks including four block assists from senior Caroline Ratterree.

In game one, Radford connected on .410 (18 kills) of its attempts, including four each from Hayes and Carlin as the Highlanders took the opener 25-16.

After Canisius closed to within two (14-12) in the second set, Radford closed on a 11-4 streak to take the frame by an identical margin and head into the break up 2-0.

The Highlanders raced out to a 10-4 advantage in the final game and never allowed Canisius closer than three the rest of the way. 

Carlin was also voted to the 2010 Radford University's All-Tournament Team.

Radford will travel to Chicago, Ill., to take on Chicago State on Thursday at 12 p.m. before entering the DePaul Tournament Friday.
