HIGHLANDER PREGAME NOTES
-- Radford will continue its three-game homestand and conference slate with a 7 p.m. tip against in-state rival VMI Thursday evening at the Dedmon Center.
-- The Highlanders enter the 34th meeting 4-11 overall and 1-4 in the Big South following a 64-59 come-from-behind victory over High Point this past weekend.
-- Senior
Jeremy Robinson (Baltimore, Md./Tallahassee Community College), who finished with 11 points, all from the line, hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 47 seconds and Radford shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half to avoid its first-ever 0-5 league start in school history.
--
Johnathan Edwards (Queens, N.Y. / Tyler Junior College) also added 11 points for the Highlanders, who finished the contest 28-of-38 from the charity stripe, including a 20-of-26 showing in the final 20 minutes of action.
-- In addition to finishing strong on the offensive end, Radford forced the Panthers into 21 turnovers, which it turned into 25 points.
-- Over the last two games, the RU guards have converted 35-of-46 free throws for a .761 clip. A majority of the tosses have come from Robinson (13-15) and
Gorkem Sonmez (Istanbul, Turkey) (10-14).
-- Sonmez continues to lead the club in scoring at 10.4 points per game, while shooting a team-best 39.1 percent (25-64) from behind the 3-point line, which ranks second among league leaders.
SCOUTING THE KEYDETS
-- The Keydets return four starters and nine letterwinners from last year's club that finished 10-19 overall and 5-13 (T-8th) in the conference.
-- Looking to become the nation's top-scoring team for the fifth consecutive season, VMI enters 9-7 overall and 2-4 in the Big South following consecutive home losses to Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern.
-- The Keydets have four players averaging double figures, led by Stan Okoye, who is tops in the conference at 19.6 per outing. Okoye also leads the conference in field goal percentage (.542) and sits third in rebounding (9.0)
-- Backcourt mates Keith Gabriel (16.8/3rd) and preseason all-conference selection Austin Kenon (15.0/6th) also rank among the Big South's Top-10 in scoring.
-- In addition to leading the nation in scoring, VMI is also tops in 3-pointers per contest and ranks fourth in steals per game (10.3).
-- The Keydets also lead the conference in rebounding offense (40.6), blocked shots (4.8), turnover margin (+4.13), while sitting second in steals per game (10.3) and assists per game (15.6).
-- VMI has dropped four of its last five to the Highlanders, allowing 99.4 points per outing.
