BOX SCORE
RADFORD, Va. – Coastal Carolina ran its winning streak to 18 straight and remained undefeated in the Big South with an 86-63 victory over Radford in men's basketball action on Homecoming Saturday at the Dedmon Center.
“Coastal is a really strong team,” said Highlander head coach Brad Greenberg. “They remind me of our team from a couple years ago. They're a tough team and they don't beat themselves.”
Desmond Holloway, the reigning conference player of the week, finished with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Anthony Raffa (17) and Chad Gray (13) also added double figures for the Chanticleers, who shot 50 percent (9-18) from long range.
Tolga Cerrah (Ankara, Turkey) and
Martins Abele (Saldus, Latvia) were the only Radford (4-17, 1-10 Big South) players in double figures with 10 points each.
Lukas Winegarner (Sodertalje, Sweden) led all players with nine rebounds to go along with eight points.
“I'm very happy with the potential of our three freshman frontcourt players,” said Greenberg.
After Coastal Carolina (20-2, 11-0 Big South) used a 19-4 run to stretch its lead to 41-24 with just under four minutes to play in the opening period, Radford closed on a 10-2 flurry to cut the deficit to 43-34 at the half.
In addition to drilling 6-of-8 3-pointers and shooting 56 percent in the first half, three Chanticleers hit the 10-point plateau prior to intermission.
Coastal Carolina, which led by as many as 29, opened the second half on an 18-6 run to push its lead back to double figures where it would stay the rest of the way.
The two teams combined for just 16 turnovers, while the Chanticleers held a 44-39 edge on the glass.
“We got a lot of shots up, they just scored a little easier than us tonight,” Greenberg added,
Radford will conclude its three-game homestand with a 7 p.m. tip against Winthrop on Tuesday evening.
