RADFORD, Va. – Both
Rachel Wiechecki (Wilmington, Del./Ursuline Academy) and
Emma Deininger (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) charted double-figure kills to lead Radford to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-17) sweep of Charleston Southern in Big South volleyball action Friday evening at the Dedmon Center.
In addition to Wiechecki (12 kills) and Deininger's (10 kills) offensive performance, the Highlanders (9-12, 3-3 Big South) got a match-high 25 assists from senior
Leigh Myers (Baton Rouge, La./The Dunham School), while
Rachel Brummitt (Plano, Texas/Plano West) picked up 15 digs.
In the opener, Radford raced out to a 5-1 advantage and never looked back on its way to a 25-19 win.
Game two wasn't much different as the Highlanders scored six of the first seven points and stretched the margin to as many as seven, 11-4, before hanging on for a 25-23 triumph and going into the break up, 2-0.
Wiechecki and Deininger paced Radford at intermission with seven and six kills, respectively, while Kayla Klinger had eight on 17 swings for the Bucs (4-17, 1-5).
After a back-and-forth start to game three, the Highlanders broke the set open with a 13-5 spurt capped off by a Wiechecki kill to go up, 17-9. Charleston Southern cut the deficit to four (20-16), but that's as close as it would get as Radford scored five of the last six points to secure to game and sweep.
As a team, the Highlanders connected on .215 (44-107) of their attack attempts, while holding Charleston Southern to just .143 (32-98).
Klinger led her team with 10 kills. Despite the loss, the Buccaneers finished with 10 total blocks to Radford's six.
Radford will conclude its homestand Saturday with a “Homecoming / Dig Pink” contest against Coastal Carolina at 4 p.m.
