GAME TWO RALLY SPARKS VOLLEYBALL'S ROAD WIN AT CAMPBELL

BOX SCORE

BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Radford got off to a slow start, but found momentum early in game two and rallied for a 3-1 road win at Campbell (14-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-20) in Big South volleyball action, Friday evening from the Pope Convocation Center.

Freshman Rachel Wiechecki (Wilmington, Del./Ursuline Academy) posted a double-double with a match and career-high 17 kills, along with 10 digs and a .270 attack percentage. The Highlanders (8-10, 2-2 Big South) were strong defensively as freshman Rachel Brummitt (Plano, Texas/Plano West) registered a match-best 28 digs, 27 coming in the final three games.

Sophomore Emily Carlin (Downington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) added 12 digs and chipped in with nine kills and three block assists.

After dropping the first set 25-14 and falling behind 6-1 in set two, the Highlanders chipped away and keyed by a 4-0 run evened the match. That game two rally sparked a quick start (10-3) to game three and Radford would go on to pull away late in the clinching game to post a victory in its first league road contest of the season.

Campbell (8-10, 2-2), which hit 526, used an early 4-0 run to grab an 8-5 lead in game one and did not trail the rest of the way to take the early 1-0 advantage. Radford would get within one (8-7), but a 5-0 spurt pushed the Camels' lead to 13-7 and they would close out the game scoring eight of the final 10 points.

After falling behind 6-1 in game two, the Highlanders settled down and evened the match and one-apiece with a 25-23 triumph. An early 4-1 spurt kept Radford afloat and when it was trailing 14-13, a 4-0 run, highlighted by two aces from freshman Christine Beckham (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) put the Highlanders ahead 17-14. They would not relinquish that lead and closed the game out on a block from freshman Emma Deininger (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and sophomore Jesse Miedema (Huron, Ohio/Huron).

Radford controlled most of game three and used a double-digit lead to its advantage. With the Highlanders leading 22-9, the Camels were able to get within five twice (23-18 & 24-19) before an attack error gave Radford the 25-19 win.

Wiechecki's seven kills and late 6-2 run clinched the match in game four. Radford took a 13-9 lead, but Campbell came storming back to tie it at 14-apiece. However, with the match knotted at 15-15, a kill by senior Carly Fleming (Manassas, Va./Osbourne Park) ignited the match-clinching run.

Fleming finished with eight kills, while the rookie setting duo of Jena Braden (New Knoxville, Ohio/New Knoxville) and Beckham dished out 21 and 18 assists, respectively.

Radford heads to Big South foe High Point tomorrow for a 4 p.m. match.
