VOLLEYBALL DROPS TIGHT FIVE-SET AFFAIR AT HIGH POINT

Radford dropped a back-and-forth five-set match at High Point (25-14, 18-25, 29-27, 22-25, 15-9) in Big South volleyball action on Saturday from the Millis Center.

In a match that saw 37 ties and 21 lead changes, the Panthers (5-14, 3-2) took sets one and three, while the Highlanders (8-11, 2-3 Big South) bounced back with victories in sets two and four. In the deciding fifth set, High Point broke open an 8-7 contest with two straight points and scored seven of the final nine to take it, 15-9.

Freshmen Emma Deininger (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and Rachel Wiechecki (Wilmington, Del./Ursuline Academy) paced the Highlanders' attack with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Deininger's total was tied for a match best as she attacked .444 on the evening. Both recorded two blocks with Wiechecki adding eight digs.

Freshman Rachel Brummitt (Plano, Texas/Plano West) dug it a match-high 34 times, which was her conference-best third 30-dig performance of the season. She recorded eight digs in games two and four and added seven more in game five.

Courtney Johnk was one of three Panthers with double-doubles, recording 14 kills and 11 digs. Lauren Bell dished out a match-high 37 assists and also chipped in defensively with 12 digs.

Keyed by a 10-2 start and .423 attack percentage, High Point led from start to finish in game one, while Radford closed out a tight game two with a 7-1 run to even the match a 1-1.

Games three and four saw 13 ties each with six and eight lead changes, respectively. In the third game, the Panthers staved off two game points and won on back-to-back kills by Chelsea Davis and Bell, 29-27.

The Highlanders, sparked by two Emily Carlin (Downington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) kills, sent it to a deciding game with a 4-1 set-ending spurt.

Radford steps out of conference on Tuesday, Oct. 11 when it hosts James Madison at 6 p.m.
