RADFORD, VA. – Led by Johnathan Edwards' (Queens, N.Y. / Tyler JUCO) career-high 16 points, Radford had five players hit double figures as the Highlanders cruised by Shenandoah, 79-50, in non-conference men's basketball action Saturday evening at the Dedmon Center.
 
Sophomores Tolga Cerrah (Ankara, Turkey) and Jareal Smith (Savannah, Ga. / Johnson) added 12 points each, while the Highlanders got 11 points from both R.J. Price (Richmond, Va. / Atlee) and fellow freshman Brian Darden (Hampton, Va. / Phoebus). Price and Darden combined to hit six of their club's seven treys.
 
Cerrah also pulled down a game-high eight boards as Radford held a commanding 41-22 advantage on the glass. RU tallied 44 of its points in the paint, while outscoring Shenandoah 41-14 in the second half.
 
The Highlanders, who picked up the defensive pressure after the half, broke open a close contest with a 28-8 run to go up, 70-48, and put the game out of reach.
 
Radford, which shot 49.2 percent, including a .538 clip in the final stanza, forced a total of 25 turnovers, 14 coming after intermission.
 
The Highlanders led by as many as eight with four minutes to play in the opening period before going to the break up, 38-36, on a two-handed dunk by Cerrah as time expired.
 
Shenandoah kept the score close in the first 20 minutes of action drilling eight 3-pointers and shooting 52 percent overall.
 
Dominic Chappell was the lone Hornet in double digits with 11 points, including three of his club's nine 3-pointers.
 
After getting off to a blistering start, Shenandoah shot just 23.8 percent in the final period to finish at 39.1 percent (18-46).
 
Radford will continue its stretch of seven games in 13 days to open the 2011-12 season with a 7 p.m. contest at Penn State Monday evening. The first-ever meeting between the two schools will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
