STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Tim Frazier scored 20 points and handed out 10 assists to lead Penn State to a 62-46 victory over Radford in the opening game for both teams in the 2011 Basketball Hall-of-Fame Tip-Off on Monday evening at Bryce Jordan Arena.
Sophomore
Jareal Smith (Savannah, Ga./Johnson) was the lone Highlander in double figures with 16 points, including Radford's first 11 points of the game. Smith was 4-for-8 from behind the 3-point arc.
Radford (2-1) will continue its first-ever appearance in the Hall-of-Fame Tip-Off on Saturday evening against Long Island in Uncasville, Conn.
After Smith gave the Highlanders an 11-5 lead 4:36 into the game, Penn State (2-0) responded with 14 unanswered points to take the lead for good. In addition to their lengthy spurt, the Nittany Lions held Radford without a field goal for almost nine minutes in the first half before going to the break up, 29-20.
Penn State hit three consecutive 3-pointers to begin the second half, extending the lead to 14. Trailing 40-23, the Highlanders responded with a 10-3 run, closing the gap back to 44-34 on
Brian Darden's (Hampton, Va./Phoebus) free throw at 10:40. The Nittany Lions answered back with 3-pointers on their next two trips down the floor to put the game away.
In addition to his second career double-double, Frazier pulled down six rebounds, while going 9-of-14 from the floor.
Penn State shot 45.3 percent (24-for-53), including six 3-pointers in the second half. Radford hit 34 percent of its attempts from the field (16-of-43) and 9-of-26 tries (34.6 percent) from the 3-point arc.
Radford returns to action on Wednesday evening when Central Penn College visits the Dedmon Center for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
