RADFORD, Va. – Freshman
Javonte Green (Alberta, Va. / Brunswick) scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds (6 offensive) to lead Radford to a 78-49 victory over Central Penn College Wednesday evening at the Dedmon Center.
In just 16 minutes off the bench, Green went 6-of-11 from the floor, while contributing five steals and three assists.
Brian Darden (Hampton, Va. / Phoebus) and
Jareal Smith (Savannah, Ga. / Johnson) also scored in double figures for the Highlanders with 12 and 10, respectively, while
Johnathan Edwards (Queens, N.Y. / Tyler JUCO) pulled down a personal best 14 rebounds (6 offensive).
After the Knights scored the first four points of the second half to go up, 31-30, the Highlanders responded with a 25-6 run to go back in front for good and put the game out of reach.
Radford finished the contest shooting 39 percent (30-77), while holding Central Penn (4-3) to 34 percent (18-53).
The Highlanders (3-1) recorded 14 steals and forced 16 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of action to lead 30-27 at intermission.
Edwards grabbed 11 of his rebounds in the opening half.
In addition outrebounding the Knights, 57-38, Radford got 50 points from its bench, forced 25 turnovers and came away with 17 steals.
Andre Batte was the lone Knight in double figures with 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting.
Radford will continue its first-ever appearance in the 2011 Basketball Hall-of-Fame Tip-Off on Saturday evening against Long Island at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.
