UNCASVILLE, Conn. – In addition to shooting 59.6 percent, Long Island had five score in double figures as the Blackbirds defeated Radford, 81-59, in the 2011 Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-off Saturday evening at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
Michael Culpo led the Blackbirds with 14 points, including four of his club's seven 3-pointers. Jamal Olasewere had 12 points, C.J. Garner and Kenny Onyechi added 11 each, while Julian Boyd recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Long Island (1-3) closed the opening period on an 8-0 run to take a 35-23 lead into the break.
Culpo's 3-pointer early in the second half capped off an 18-2 Long Island run that pushed the margin to 20 (45-25) and out of reach.
Jareal Smith (Savannah, Ga. / Johnson) was the lone Highlander in double figures with 10 points.
Javonte Green (Alberta, Va. / Brunswick) added nine points and nine rebounds (8 offensive) in 25 minutes off the bench.
After shooting 57.7 percent in the first 20 minutes of action, Long Island connected on 16-of-26 attempts (.615) in the final period.
The two teams combined for 42 turnovers, while the Blackbirds held a 36-33 edge on the glass.
Despite the loss, the Highlanders finished with 18 offensive rebounds, which led to 19 second chance points.
Radford (3-2) shot just 35.3 percent from the field and 22.2 percent behind the arc.
The Highlanders will continue their appearance in the inaugural event tomorrow evening with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Marist.
