WASHINGTON, D.C. – A 23-0 opening run proved to be the difference as George Washington took a 83-59 win over Radford women's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Smith Center in the Highlanders' first road contest of 2011-12.
The Colonials' frontcourt, which averages 6-foot-2, gave the Highlanders trouble early on as the defensive pressure keyed the run to start the game. Danni Jackson hit two three-pointers and had 10 of the 23 GW points.
Jackson finished with 14 points, while Tara Booker and Sara Mostafa had 11 apiece. Brooke Wilson also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Highlanders went 9:47 without a bucket to begin the contest until
Da'Naria Erwin Spencer (Charlotte, N.C./East Mecklenburg) ended the drought with a three-point play on a left-handed layup and ensuing free throw.
At one point, Erwin Spencer and
Ashley Buckhannon (Wytheville, Va./George Wythe) had 23 of Radford's 27 points. Buckhannon finished with a game-high 19 points and went 11-of-12 from the free throw line. Erwin Spencer capped the game with 13.
Despite the 29-point deficit at the half, Radford provided the intensity in the second half, as the Highlanders out-scored GW 48-43 in the second frame.
Although George Washington had the height advantage, the Highlanders out-rebounded the Colonials' 49-44 and pulled down 28 on the offensive glass.
Sarah Tabb (Chesapeake, Va./StoneBridge School) led Radford in rebounding with a career-high 9 boards, 7 on the offensive end.
Radford continues a month-long swing away from home with a 2 p.m contest at in-state foe Longwood on Dec. 3.
