SECOND HALF RUN LEADS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PAST WOFFORD, 63-46

BOX SCORE

ASHEVILLE, N.C. A 20-2 run to open the second half allowed Radford women's basketball to take a 63-46 victory over first-time opponent Wofford Saturday afternoon in the Asheville Collegiate Invitational.

The two squads entered the second half tied 27-27.  Neither team scored for the first 3:43 of the second period until a pair of free throws by Ashley Buckhannon (Wytheville, Va./George Wythe) with 16:17 on the clock gave Radford (5-3) its first lead of the game, 29-27.  From there, Radford went on its 20-2 run and never looked back.

The Radford win was the first away from home in the month of December since Dec. 22, 2007.

Da'Naria Erwin Spencer (Charlotte, N.C./East Mecklenburg) led all scorers with 24 points, her third 20-plus point performance of the season.  Ayana Avery (Cleveland, N.C./West Rowan) was the other Highlander in double figures with a career-high 13.  Victoria Hamilton (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands/Antilles School) reached the double figure mark in rebounds for the second straight game with 12, just one off her career-high.

Wofford (6-3) was led by Logan Morris with 11 points and April Moorhouse chipped in with 10 points to go along with 8 rebounds.

The Highlanders forced 23 Terrier miscues leading to a 22-6 advantage in points off turnovers.  Radford also grabbed 19 offensive rebounds leading to 11 second-chance points.

Buckhannon's only bucket of the first half came on a layup with 1:03 remaining, which allowed Radford to even the score, 25-25.

On the ensuing possession, a jumper from the corner by Mariah Masalin put the Terriers up by two, 27-25. Erwin Spencer drew a foul on the Radford counter and converted two from the stripe to secure a tie at the end of a competitive first-half, 27-27.   Erwin Spencer came up with 13 of Radford's 27 first-half points.

After a week off for exams, Radford will end its season-long six-game road swing with a weekend set at Norfolk State (Dec. 16) and Virginia (Dec. 18).
