CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In addition to shooting 50 percent from the field, Virginia placed five players in double figures to take a 92-43 decision over Radford Sunday afternoon in women's basketball action at John Paul Jones Arena.
It was the fifth consecutive win for Virginia (9-2) and the sixth straight against Radford (6-4) in the series. Furthermore, the Cavaliers have held six straight opponents under 60 points.
Lexie Gerson led all scorers with 19 and went 4-for-6 from downtown. Jazmin Pitts recorded 16 points, including 12 straight during a late stretch in the second half. Telia McCall had 13 and Ariana Moorer and Ataira Franklin added 10 apiece.
Ashley Buckhannon (Wytheville, Va./George Wythe) led the way for the Highlanders with 14 points.
Victoria Hamilton (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands/Antilles School) also had a solid outing with 10 points and pulled down 7 boards.
Radford jumped out to an 8-0 early advantage over the first 2:25. Buckhannon tallied all eight points on two three-pointers and a fast-break layup in the short spurt.
Following the hot Highlander start, Virginia came out of a timeout and responded with a 25-4 run on a balanced attack, as six Cavaliers got in the scoring column. Radford wouldn't see the lead again, as the Cavaliers went into intermission up 44-20.
Virginia held a commanding 48-12 edge in points in the paint and bench points, 55-7.
After a month away from the Dedmon Center, Radford returns home for two straight contests to end the 2011 calendar year, beginning with Davidson on Dec. 22 at 5 p.m. followed by a New Year's Eve showdown with in-state rival Liberty at 4:30 p.m. to open Big South play.
