LATE RUN LEADS GARDNER- WEBB PAST RADFORD, 61-55

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va. – In addition to a game-high 19 points from Tashan Newsome, Gardner-Webb used a late run to get by Radford, 61-55, in Big South men's basketball action on New Year's Eve at the Dedmon Center.

Trailing 48-46, the 'Runnin Bulldogs went on an 11-2 spurt to take a seven-point advantage, 57-50, with 28 seconds to play and put the game out of reach.

Prior to its game-changing run, Gardner-Webb (7-8. 2-1 Big South) hadn't led by more than one, the entire contest.

Max Landis and Kevin Hartley, who nailed a big 3-pointer to make it 55-50, also added double figures for the 'Runnin Bulldogs with 10 points each.

Gardner-Webb went 13-of-23 (.565) at the free-throw line, while Radford made all three of its attempts.

R.J. Price (Richmond, Va., Atlee) paced the Highlanders with 15 points, to go along with five assists, Jareal Smith (Savannah, Ga., Johnson) had 13 points and Javonte Green (Alberta, Va., Brunswick) recorded his second straight double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Radford (3-12, 0-3 Big South), which never trailed in the first half, used a 12-3 run to stretch its lead to as many as nine, 21-12, before going to the break up, 33-30.

Despite the setback, the Highlanders finished with a 43-38 edge on the glass.

Gardner-Webb forced 16 turnovers, which it turned into 16 points at the other end.

Both clubs shot under 40 percent from the field.

Radford will conclude its brief homestand Monday with a 7 p.m. contest against Asheville, last year's Big South Tournament Champion.
