RADFORD, Va. – Playing its first home game in almost three weeks, Radford suffered a 57-49 setback to Charlotte in non-conference men's basketball action on Tuesday evening at the Dedmon Center.
Chris Braswell led the 49ers with a game-high 14 points, while DeMario Mayfield contributed a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Charlotte (5-2) finished the contest shooting 37.3 percent (19-51), while Radford was just 29 percent (18-62) from the floor and only 1-of-19 from long range.
Johnathan Edwards (Queens, N.Y. / Tyler JUCO) and
Javonte Green (Alberta, Va. / Brunswick) were the lone Highlanders in double figures with 11 points each.
Charlotte, which opened 5-of-7 from the floor, raced out to a 12-2 lead before taking a 31-22 lead into the break.
Radford (3-7) slowly chipped away at a double-digit deficit and cut it to five a couple of times in the second half, but was unable to get closer.
After the Highlanders used a 12-3 run highlighted by consecutive Green dunks to make it a 15-14 game, the 49ers responded with another spurt to stretch their lead to as many as 12 at 31-19 with 1:34 to go in the period.
Despite trailing 43-38 on the glass, Radford finished with 17 offensive rebounds.
The Highlanders forced 17 turnovers and recorded 12 steals.
Radford will conclude its brief homestand Saturday afternoon with a 4 p.m. contest against in-state foe George Mason.
