RUTV: RADFORD CONTROLS PAINT IN 69-47 WIN OVER WINTHROP

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va. --
Brooke McElroy scored a game-high 18 points and Radford outscored Winthrop 36-6 in the paint to earn a 69-47 victory in Big South women's basketball action Monday evening from the Dedmon Center.

The win snapped a three-game slide for the Highlanders (11-14, 8-4 Big South), who wrapped up the home portion of their schedule and finished 8-5 this season at the Dedmon Center

Radford shot 44 percent for the contest and turned it over a mere six times, while forcing 22 Eagle miscues. The Highlanders have now committed 10 or fewer turnovers in four of their last five contests.

McElroy was 7-for-12 from the floor and scored 12 of her points in the second half. She added seven rebounds as the Highlanders out rebounded the Lady Eagles (12-13, 5-7) by a slim margin, 35-34.
POST-GAME: Tajama Abraham Ngongba

Denay Wood added 11 points and a team-best nine rebounds for the Highlanders.

Dequesha McClanahan paced Winthrop with 12 points and four assists. TaQuoia Hammick pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and recorded three blocks.

The dominance in the paint was the top performance of the year in terms of margin (+30), surpassing the 32-8 advantage against Southern Virginia on Dec. 9.

The Highlanders scored 26 of their 31 first half points in the paint and shot 44 percent to grab a 31-22 lead at the break. Four players scored six or more points for Radford led by Wood's half-high eight.

After a 10-0 run by Winthrop put Radford in an early 10-4 hole, the Highlanders methodically got back into the game and took a 20-17 lead on back-to-back steals and easy buckets at 7:45.

The Lady Eagles would knot the score at 20 on three points from Hammick, but the Highlanders scored four quick points to ignite a half-ending 11-2 run that was capped off by another steal and fast break layup with 19 seconds on the clock.

In the second half, Radford maintained a seven-point advantage for the first 8:30 before a 14-2 gave the Highlanders a 59-40 lead and put the game out of reach with 5:35 left on the clock.

After a triple by Lacey Lyons cut Radford's lead to 45-38, Ashley Buckhannon answered with a trifecta of her own as she and Ema Reskoska scored five points each during the crucial run.

The Highlanders registered 17 steals, four from Buckhannon, and six blocks, three courtesy of Kahealani Vick.

Radford hits the road for its final four regular season games, beginning with Charleston Southern on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.
