BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Jon Moore scored 25 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to lead Gardner-Webb to a 71-63 victory over Radford in Big South men's basketball action Thursday evening at Paul Porter Arena.
In addition to Moore's performance, the Runnin' Bulldogs shot 64 percent in the final period, while Radford (5-23, 2-15 Big South) wasn't far behind at 55.6 percent. Both clubs finished the contest shooting 49.1 percent.
The Highlanders, who started the second half 8-of-12 from the floor, stretched their advantage to as many as 12 with 11 consecutive points.
Trailing 47-35, Gardner-Webb (10-20, 5-12 Big South) outscored Radford 25-8 over the next 8:30 to go in front for good. Stefon Johnson's 15-foot jumper with 3:47 to play, gave the Runnin' Bulldogs their first lead since the 4:52 mark of the first half.
Jareal Smith (Savannah, Ga. / Johnson) led three Highlanders in double figures with 16 points, while
Blake Smith (Charlotte, N.C. / United Faith Christian Academy) had 13 and
Jeremy Robinson (Baltimore, Md. / Tallahassee C.C.) added 11 on 5-of-6 shooting off the bench.
Johnson also hit the 10-point plateau for Gardner-Webb with 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Luke Davis, who entered fourth in the league in assists per game, handed out 10 with just three turnovers.
The opening 20 minutes featured three lengthy runs, including a 12-4 spurt by the Highlanders to close the half and take a 29-25 lead into the break.
After Radford used a 15-2 streak to go up 17-8 on a
Gorkem Sonmez (Istanbul, Turkey) trey with 13:05 left, the Runnin' Bulldogs responded with 13 unanswered over the next 5:31 to retake the lead, 21-17.
Radford will conclude its 2010-11 season with a 2 p.m. contest at UNC Asheville Saturday.
