CHARLESTON, S.C. – Radford survived its second buzzer beater in league play this season by scoring the final nine points of overtime to edge Charleston Southern, 81-78, in a Big South women's basketball thriller, Saturday afternoon from CSU Fieldhouse.
With the Highlanders (12-14, 9-4 Big South) clinging to a three-point lead and inbounding under their own hoop with 7.1 seconds left in regulation, CSU's Helen Terry stole the inbounds pass, dished it to Anicia Dotson, who found Kelsey Wasmer wide open in the corner for the game-tying triple as the buzzer sounded.
The Buccaneers (12-14, 6-7) opened the first 3:10 of the overtime with an 8-2 run to grab a six-point advantage.
Four straight points in a 22-second span by
Breshara Gordon gave the momentum back to the Highlanders.
Following an offensive foul by Wasmer, Da'Naria Erwin Spencer tied the game with a short off balance jumper off the glass with 44 seconds on the clock. After a missed shot,
Kahealani Vick was fouled on the rebound and hit both her freebies to put the Highlanders up for good, 80-78 with 13 ticks on the clock.
Gordon would make one-of-two free throws with four seconds left and Terry's half-court heave hit the backboard and bounced away.
Erwin Spencer led the Highlanders, who shot just under 52 percent, with 20 points on 7-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Ashley Buckhannon and
Denay Wood chipped in with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Buckhannon, who was 6-of-10 from the floor, also recorded four steals and three assists. Gordon added nine points, seven after halftime.
Katie Tull and Wasmer paced the Buccaneers with 24 and 21 points, respectively, combining for 11 of CSU's 12 three-pointers. CSU shot 47 percent from the field and 41.4 percent from beyond the arc, but struggled at the line (54.5%).
Buckhannon scored 11 of Radford's first 18 points and keyed by a 12-0 run, the Highlanders took a 20-14 lead at 10:49.
Behind six consecutive triples, three from Tull, the Buccaneers used an 18-5 run to take a 32-25 lead at the 5:53 mark. Tull finished the half with 16 points hitting 4-for-7 from deep.
The Highlanders fought back from a late nine-point deficit to only trail by one (38-37) at the break.
Both teams were red-hot in the first half as the Highlanders shot 54 percent and the Buccaneers, 50 percent. CSU also hit 8-of-14 from long range.
In a tightly contested second half that featured seven lead changes and five ties, Radford battled back from two six-point deficits and grabbed the lead with just over a minute left in regulation, but could not secure the victory as it hit just 4-of-8 free throws in the final 1:14.
After starting 7-for-8 from the line in the first 20 minutes, the Highlanders struggles lasted the entire second half. They were 11-of-27 (40.7 percent) in the second 20 minutes and 56.1 percent (23-41) for the game.
Radford outrebound Charleston Southern, 37-34 led by Vick's seven.
Radford continues play on Monday when it travels to Presbyterian for a 7 p.m. contest.
