ASHEVILLE KNOCKS OFF FIRST-PLACE HIGHLANDERS, 70-60

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va. – Kelli Riles and Lindsey Montgomery recorded double-doubles and combined for 40 points and 32 rebounds as UNC Asheville knocked off first-place Radford, 70-60, Saturday afternoon from the Dedmon Center.

The Bulldogs' (10-11, 3-6 Big South) victory also snapped the Highlanders' (10-12, 7-2) four-game winning streak.

Riles pulled down a career-best 22 rebounds and added 18 points, while Montgomery tallied a game-high 22 points, 18 in the second half, 10 boards and three blocks. It was their ninth and sixth double-doubles of the season, respectively.

Their effort on the glass led to the Bulldogs finishing with a commanding 58-35 advantage in rebounds, including 44 on the defensive end.

Ashley Buckhannon and Da'Naria Erwin Spencer paced Radford with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Erwin Spencer also grabbed seven boards.

After Asheville grabbed its largest lead (42-29), Ema Reskoska scored six of her eight second-half points during a 16-6 run to get Radford within striking distance (48-45) with 5:45 left in the contest.

Three minutes later, consecutive triples from Erwin Spencer and Buckhannon tied the game (56-56) at 2:22. However, Montgomery responded with back-to-back buckets and Asheville hit 8-of-10 freebies to secure the win.

Kendall Shepard was also in double figures for the Bulldogs with 14 points. She and Erwin Spencer dished out a game-high six assists.

UNC Asheville closed out the first half with an 8-0 spurt to grab a 29-20 lead at halftime. The Highlanders were held to 24 percent shooting (8-33), while the Bulldogs heated up towards the end of the half and finished just under 39 percent (12-31).

Asheville's spurt came in the final 2:10 just as Radford climbed back into the game on an Erica Rivera layup that capped off an 8-0 Highlander run.

The Highlanders finished the game with just five turnovers, a season-low, as they've committed just 14 the last two contests. It is a new low mark for miscues and the fewest since recording six against Morehead State on Nov. 27, 1994.

Radford will return from a lengthy break on Monday, Feb. 14 when it heads to Coastal Carolina for a 7 pm contest.
