BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Despite a game-tying basket at the buzzer, Radford fell in its regular season finale at Gardner-Webb, 79-67 in overtime, Sunday afternoon from Paul Porter Arena.
With the victory by the Runnin'Bulldogs (20-10, 11-5), they tied the Highlanders (14-15, 11-5) for second place in the league, but by virtue of a tiebreaker, Radford will be the second seed at 2011 Advance Auto Parts Big South Championships held March 11-13 at High Point University.
A time and opponent for the tournament are yet to be determined as two more contests will be played tomorrow night
"I'm really proud of how hard we battled tonight," said head coach
Tajama Abraham Ngongba. We just didn't make plays down the stretch in overtime."
In a wild final 16 seconds of regulation, Radford tied the game twice. Da'Naria Erwin Spencer hit a foul line jumper with 16 ticks on the clock to tie it at 57.
That was followed by Gardner-Webb's Sandra Vaitkute hit a go-ahead layup with 6.9 seconds left in regulation.
After a timeout,
Victoria Hamilton sent the game into overtime with a basket after a loose ball scramble. The shot was originally waved off, but replay overruled and the Highlanders went into overtime for the second straight game and three of the last four.
In the extra session, 15 of Gardner-Webb's 20 points came from the charity stripe as it outscored Radford, 20-8 which included a 9-1 run to start overtime.
"Despite the tough loss today, these ladies have worked hard the entire regular season and I could not be more proud of them," commented Ngongba.
Erwin Spencer tied for a game-high 18 points and was one of four Highlanders in double figures.
Denay Wood recorded her second straight double-double with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Hamilton and
Brooke McElroy added 10 points apiece with McElroy contributing with eight rebounds and three steals.
Dominique Hudson matched Erwin Spencer with a game-high 18 points with LaTroya Pope adding a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Gardner-Webb took a 29-19 into halftime behind 10 points from Hudson and a poor shooting half by the Highlanders (28.6%).
Wood hit two of her four trifectas to start the second half and ignite a 22-7 run over the first eight minutes as the Highlanders roared back to take a 41-36 lead. During the run, Radford (8-13 FG) hit its first three triples and added an old-fashioned three-point play to grab its first lead of the game.
Trailing by six (49-43), Gardner-Webb stormed back with a 12-0 run and took a 55-49 lead with just under four minutes on the clock.
However Radford battled back and took advantage of missed free throws to send the game into overtime.
