RUTV: SOFTBALL SWEEPS COASTAL CAROLINA

GAME ONE BOX | GAME TWO BOX

RADFORD, Va. – Radford swept Coastal Carolina in a Big South doubleheader, Sunday afternoon from RU Softball Field. The Highlanders (27-14, 8-2 Big South) won by the scores of 4-2 and 8-1.

Michelle Beall hit a three-run home run in the sixth to lift Radford to a 4-2 win over Coastal Carolina (17-24, 3-5) in the opener.

After Coastal grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth, a single and an error put runners on, then Beall deposited the second pitch over the left field fence for the game-winner.

Jackie Jenkins put in another strong showing. The sophomore scattered six hits, allowed an earned run and struck out four to improve to 12-2.

Radford took a 1-0 lead in the third on a two-out RBI double by Shannon Keefe.

Jenkins got into a little trouble in the fifth as the Chanticleers put runners on second and third with one out. With the infield in, Nichole Beall snagged Olivia Piccirillo's pop up over her shoulder spun and nailed Sarah Maples trying to tie the game.

In the sixth, the Chanticleers took advantage of second and third as Jazmin Daigle singled up the middle plating the first run and then pinch runner Kara Vonatzski scored when the ball was bobbled in centerfield. Radford turned its second double play of the contest to prevent further damage.

Daigle was 2-for-3 for Coastal Carolina. Ashley Bagwell (9-11) suffered the defeat, allowing three earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts.

Kristen Shifflett was 2-for-3, while Taylor Cunningham scored two runs.

In game two, Radford scored eight runs in the first three innings and cruised to an 8-1 game two win. Nichole Beall was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Vicki Madden registered two hits and an RBI.

Stephanie Dameron earned the complete game win. She surrendered a run on six hits with three strikeouts. Dameron (W 11-3), along with Jenkins, did not walk a batter.

Radford took advantage of two errors by the shortstop to score five unearned runs and grab a 5-1 lead after two innings.

The Chanticleers tallied a run in the top of the first on three hits, the third on a RBI single by Chelsea Pineda

After Radford tied it on an error, a ground out put it ahead for good and Madden knocked in the third run with an infield single to shortstop.

In the second, Shifflett and Cunningham registered run-scoring singles to push the lead to 5-1.

A two-run bases loaded double by Nichole Beall highlighted a three-run third and closed out the scoring for the Highlanders. The first run came in on sac fly by Lauren Williams and with two outs Beall hammered the ball over the leftfielder for her second two-bagger of the contest.

Michelle Evans (5-9), who suffered the loss, allowed eight runs, three earned, in 2.2 innings of work. She also led the Chanticleers at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance
