Shannon Keefe Ties School Record with Four Runs in Game One

RADFORD, Va. – Radford split a home doubleheader with in-state foe Longwood Wednesday from RU Softball Field. The Highlanders (22-13) earned the split with a 3-1 game two win after the Lancers (19-8) won a game one slugfest, 12-9.

In the nightcap, Shannon Keefe hit a two-run home run in the first and Stephanie Dameron and Kellie Snooks held Longwood scoreless over the final six innings keying Radford to the 3-1 victory. In game one, Keefe matched a school record with four runs scored.

Keefe, who was 4-for-7 with two doubles, five runs scored and three RBI in the twinbill, staked Radford to a 2-1 lead with a two-run shot to left, erasing the Lancers' early 1-0 lead. It was the first home run of the season for the senior centerfielder.

After a tough outing in the opener, Dameron (W, 9-3) went the first 4.1 innings, surrendering a run on five hits with two strikeouts. Snooks entered with one out and one on in the fifth and need just two pitches to get out of the frame.

She would retire the side in the sixth and after allowing two singles to start the seventh, Snooks regrouped and set down the final three batters for her second save of the season.

Kristen Shifflett went 2-for-3 with a double for the Highlanders.

Ashley Kramer had two of Longwood's seven hits. Briana Wells (L 16-8) suffered the loss, scattering five hits, walking three and striking out two.

Game one saw 21 runs and 32 hits as Longwood held on for a 12-9 win behind 20-hit outburst and four-hit performances from Nichole Simmons and Jordan Cox. Simmons was 4-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored.

The Highlanders matched a season-high with 12 hits, including six doubles, two each from Keefe and Michelle Beall. Keefe and Beall registered half of Radford's hits with three apiece. Keefe scored a career-high four runs, while Beall drove in three.

Back-to-back singles sandwiched around a stolen base to start the top of the first produced Longwood's first run of the contest. The Lancers struck for three more in the second to grab a 4-0 lead.

After scoring a run in the second, Radford took the lead with a four-run, four-hit third. An RBI double by Shifflett started the rally and Vicki Madden, who was 2-for-4 with two RBI, closed out the scoring with a go-ahead single to center.

Longwood didn't waste any time matching Radford with a four-run fourth to retake the lead, 8-5. The Lancers, who would not relinquish the lead, recorded six hits, all singles, with four of the last five knocking in a run apiece.

Radford cut it to 8-7 in the fifth. Back-to-back doubles by Taylor Cunningham and Keefe put the first run on the board. Two batters later, Madden singled in Keefe from third to make it a one-run contest.

Simmons launched a key three-run home run with two outs in the sixth that pushed Longwood's lead back to four (11-7).

Keefe and Beall registered back-to-back one-out doubles and Morgan Eye singled in Beall to make it a 12-9 game, but Wells struck out the final batter to end the rally.

Dameron suffered the defeat in relief. She allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits in two-plus innings. Wells went the distance for Longwood to earn the win as she surrendered eight earned runs and struck out seven.

Radford hits the road this weekend for a Big South series at league-leader Presbyterian. The teams will play two on Saturday and one on Sunday. Both days begin at 1 p.m.
