VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO MIAMI AND FGCU; DEININGER NAMED ALL-TOURNAMENT

RADFORD, Va. – Radford volleyball was defeated 3-1 in a pair of matches by Miami and Florida Gulf Coast on the final day of the Miami/Best Western Tournament, Saturday from Millett Hall.

Freshman Emma Deininger (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) was named to the all-tournament team. The middle blocker recorded 21 kills and just three errors for a .419 attack percentage and also led the Highlanders with 12 total blocks (2 solo).

Radford (3-6) dropped its opening match of day two, falling 3-1 (22-25, 14-25, 25-19, 17-25) to host Miami ( in the morning session. Sophomores Emily Carlin (Downington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and Jesse Miedema (Huron, Ohio/Huron) led the Highlanders with 10 and nine kills respectively. Carlin added 10 digs, while Miedema recorded seven block assists as Radford finished with a match-best 10 blocks.

In game one, Radford rallied from an early 12-6 deficit with an 11-4 run to grab a brief 17-16 lead. The Redhawks pushed ahead 20-17, but the Highlanders got within one point on three occasions, but Miami put it away for the 25-22 win.

After dropping game two, Radford came back from another early deficit to grab its first lead at 11-10. With the game knotted at 16-16, a key 3-0 spurt highlighted by a Carlin kill and block by Miedema and Deininger gave the Highlanders the lead for good. They tallied five of the last six points to take home game three.

Miami closed out the match as it jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led start to finish for the four-game victory.

Rachel Brummitt (Plano, Texas/Plano West) paced Radford with a match-high 25 digs.

Carly Fleming (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) with one solo block moved into a tie with Divona Cox (2002-04) for the all-time lead with 49 during the rally scoring era.

In Radford's second match against Florida Gulf Coast (3-6), the teams split the first two games, before the Eagles (25-21, 19-25, 25-17, 25-21) sealed the victory with triumphs in games three and four.

Freshmen Christine Beckham (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) recorded her first collegiate double-double for the Highlanders with 17 assists and 12 digs.

In games one and three, FGCU used mini-spurts to break open ties midway through each and lead the rest of the way.

An early 6-0 run by the Highlanders in game two broke a 2-2 tie and they led by as much as 11 (17-6) before evening the match with a 25-19 victory. Radford hit .379 in the set, led by Deininger's five kills.

After breaking a 16-16 tie with a 4-0 run, the Eagles closed it out the fourth game by tallying the final three points after the Highlanders rallied get within 22-21 on a Brummitt ace.

Deininger finished the match with a team-best 11 kills and .529 attack percentage. She was joined by fellow frosh Rachel Wiechecki (Wilmington, Del./Ursuline Academy) with 10 kills. Brummitt added a team-high 14 digs and three service aces. Fleming also registered three aces to go along with six kills.

Radford heads to UNCG next weekend for the Spartan Spiketacular on Sept. 16 and 17. The Highlanders will open with Howard on Friday at 4 p.m.
