VOLLEYBALL TOPS HOWARD AT SPARTAN SPIKETAKULAR

BOX SCORE

GREENSBORO, N.C.– Behind a double-double from freshman Rachel Wiechecki (Wilmington, Del./Ursuline Academy) and a season-high 15 kills from sophomore Emily Carlin (Downington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), Radford volleyball opened up the Spartan Spiketacular with a 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 25-11) win over Howard, Friday evening from UNC Greensboro.

Wiechecki posted career highs with 12 kills and 12 digs to go along with four of the Highlanders' (4-6) 12 aces. Carlin hit .333, while amassing her team-high in kills.

Radford closed out the match in fine fashion hitting a blistering .500 in a 25-11 match-clinching game four. The Highlanders ran out to an 8-2 lead and never looked back.

Senior Carly Fleming (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) added nine kills on a team-best .438 attack percentage, while freshman Christine Beckham (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) and senior Leigh Myers (Baton Rough, La./The Dunham School) combined for 37 of Radford's 47 assists.

Freshman Rachel Brummitt (Plano, Texas/Plano West) chipped in defensively with 16 digs.

The teams split the two opening games by identical 25-20 scores. Radford took game one as it closed out with a 6-1 run following Howard's comeback from 18-14 to tie it at 19-19 apiece. Game two was the opposite of the first as the Bison used their own 6-1 spurt to close out and tie the match at one-apiece.

After falling behind early in game three, the Highlanders put the game away with a 12-4 run, highlighted by four kills from Carlin, that gave them a commanding 17-8 lead.

Radford wraps up the Spartan Spiketacular Saturday with contests against Memphis and host UNCG at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
