GABRIEL AND KEYDETS HOLD OFF MEN’S BASKETBALL, 80-76

LEXINGTON, Va. – Despite shooting a season-high 51.8 percent, Radford fell 80-76 at VMI in Big South men's basketball action Saturday evening at Cameron Hall.
 
The loss was the 15th straight and 25th consecutive on the road for the Highlanders as they fell to 3-16 overall and 0-7 in the league.
 
Keith Gabriel led four Keydets in double figures with a game-high 28 points, while Stan Okoye, Rodney Glasgow and Michael Sparks added 12 each.
 
R.J. Price (Mechanicsville, Va., Atlee) paced Radford with 17 points, including his club's last eight. Fellow freshman Javonte Green (Alberta, Va., Brunswick) contributed his fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds (six offensiv
e). Jareal Smith (Savannah, Ga., Johnson) also added double figures for the Highlanders with 13.
 
VMI (9-9, 4-4 Big South) went on a 13-3 spurt highlighted by 11 points from Gabriel to take its largest lead of the contest, 59-47. The Highlanders slowly chipped away at the deficit and cut it to 78-76 on a Price 3-point play with 10 seconds left, but that's as close as they would get.
 
The Keydets forced 20 turnovers, which they turned into 30 points at the other end.
 
VMI shot 53.8 percent in the second half to finish the night at 44.6 percent, which included a 10-of-25 showing from long range.
 
Radford, which shot 50 percent in the opening half, used a 16-4 run to take an eight-point lead (23-15), before going to the break up, 35-33.
 
In addition to their shooting, the Highlanders held a 35-25 advantage on the glass and 40-24 scoring difference in the paint.
 
Radford returns to the Dedmon Center Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest with High Point.
