COASTAL CAROLINA ESCAPES WITH 58-56 WIN OVER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

BOX SCORE

CONWAY, S.C. Olivia Irick converted a three-point play with 2.4 seconds remaining to allow Coastal Carolina to escape past Radford women's basketball, 58-56, Monday evening at Kimbel Arena.

Tied at 55-55, Ashley Buckhannon (Wytheville, Va./George Wythe) got fouled with 12 seconds remaining and hit the front end of the one-and-one to put Radford up, 56-55.  After a quick timeout, Irick drove down the left side of the court, spun towards the block, hit a layup and got fouled.  She would hit the ensuing free throw to give Coastal Carolina (10-5, 2-4 Big South) a two-point advantage and the win.

Radford dropped its third straight contest and fell to 7-9 overall and 1-4 in Big South play.  The tightly contested game featured 9 ties and 13 lead changes.

Irick led the Chanticleers with 15 points, AJ Jordan tallied 11 and Shatia Cole also hit double figures with 10, all coming in the second half.

Despite the loss, Da'Naria Erwin Spencer (Charlotte, N.C./East Mecklenburg) tallied 24 points, her sixth outing of 20 or more this season.  Victoria Hamilton (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands/Antilles School) was the other Highlander in double figures with 14 points, added four rebounds and tied a career-high with five steals.

Radford, the Big South leader in team free-throw percentage, struggled all night from the stripe, hitting only 6-of-16 attempts while the Chanticleers went 9-of-11.

Radford dominated the paint, 36-16 and held a 10-2 advantage in fast-break points.

Coastal Carolina took a three-point lead, 32-29, into intermission.  Erwin Spencer hit her season average in the first frame alone with 16 points.

The Highlanders are back in home action on Saturday, Jan. 21 when they take on Winthrop at 3 p.m.
