STRONG SECOND HALF LEADS CAMPBELL PAST MEN’S BASKETBALL, 73-65

RADFORD, Va. – Campbell shot 60.9 percent in the second half and got 21 points from Lorne Merthie as the Camels defeated Radford, 73-65, in Big South men's basketball action Thursday evening at the Dedmon Center.
 
Merthie, who scored 19 points after intermission, was one of three CU players in double figures as Darren White added 13 and Eric Griffin recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four blocks.
 
In addition to opening the second half 11-of-15 from the floor, Campbell (13-8, 7-2 Big South) used a 17-5 streak highlighted by 16 points from Merthie, to break open a back and forth contest and take a 61-50 lead with 5:42 remaining.
 
Prior to the Camels' game-changing run, the two teams battled to 11 ties and 12 lead changes.
 
Javonte Green led the Highlanders with 16 points, while fellow freshman R.J. Price finished with 14.
 
After Radford (4-17, 1-8 Big South) used a 10-0 run to grab its largest lead of the first half, 22-14, Campbell responded with a spurt of its own to tie the score for a sixth time in the period, 27-27. A Jareal Smith 3-pointer with a minute to play gave the Highlanders a 30-27 advantage at the break.
 
The Camels, who entered 3rd in the nation in field-goal percentage (.503), finished the game shooting 50 percent (7-13 3-pointers), while Radford shot just 39.6 percent (21-53)
 
Campbell held a 36-29 advantage on the glass.
 
The Highlanders will travel to Coastal Carolina for a 2 p.m. contest Saturday, before playing six of their last nine at home.
