VMI HOLDS OFF MEN’S BASKETBALL, 65-60

RADFORD, Va. – Javonte Green's sixth double-double of the season wasn't enough as Radford fell to VMI, 65-60, in Big South men's basketball action Thursday evening at the Dedmon Center.
 
Green, the lone Highlander in double figures, finished with 23 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while going 8-of-12 from the floor.
 
The loss drops Radford to 4-19 overall and 1-10 in the league, while the Keydets get their first road win of the season improving to 11-10 and 6-5.
 
Junior Stan Okoye paced VMI with 23 points (9-12 FT) and nine rebounds. 
 
Both teams got to the free throw line 30 times. VMI made 20 of its attempts, while the Highlanders shot just 53 percent (16-30).
 
After Radford scored five straight to go up, 35-32, the Keydets responded with a 15-1 run to take their largest lead of the contest, 47-36, with 11:14 to play. The Highlanders slowly chipped away at the deficit and cut it to three (63-60) on an R.J. Price trey with 32 seconds left, but was unable to get closer.
 
VMI shot 43.8 percent, while the Highlanders finished at 42.6 percent. The two club's combined for 42 turnovers.
 
In addition to its 36-29 advantage on the glass, Radford recorded 14 steals.
 
Radford (17) and VMI (11) combined for 28 turnovers in the first half as the two teams went to the break tied, 30-30.
 
Despite the miscues in the first 20 minutes, the Highlanders shot 53 percent in the period and got 14 points from Green on 5-of-5 (4-5 FT) shooting.
 
Radford will continue its three-game homestand Saturday with a 4 p.m. contest against in-state / league-rival Liberty.
