RADFORD RUNS PAST GARDNER-WEBB, 63-50

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Da'Naria Erwin Spencer topped the 20-point plateau for the seventh time this season and Sarah Tabb added a career-high 16 points to lead Radford women's basketball past Gardner-Webb, 63-50, Saturday evening at Paul Porter Arena.
 
With the win, Radford improved to 9-10 overall, 3-5 in league play, and won its second consecutive game.
 
Erwin Spencer recorded 21 points and went 8-of-8 from the stripe.  Tabb netted 16 points and helped Radford to a 28-14 advantage in the paint.  Tabb also added 8 rebounds, 6 coming on the offensive end.  Ashley Buckhannon chipped in with 11 points to round out the double-digit scorers.  Victoria Hamilton had a quiet night in the scoring column with 4 points but pulled down a game-high 9 rebounds.
 
Mayhana Dunovant led Gardner-Webb (2-16, 1-7 Big South) with 11 points, while Jasmine Dale scored all 10 of her points in the first half.
 
“I thought overall we did a good job with our defensive pressure and connecting in transition.  We also had good leadership on the floor tonight.  It helped continue our momentum, especially when the game was cut to six in the first half,” commented head coach Tajama Abraham Ngongba
 
The defense forced 27 miscues and held a 30-18 edge in points off turnovers.
 
For the first time all season, Radford surpassed 80 percent from the stripe as a team, hitting 14-of-17 attempts.  
 
With her first assist on a Buckhannon score, Erwin Spencer broke into Radford's all-time top-10 in career assists with 239.  She would dish out one more to solely possess 10th place on the all-time list.  
 
Radford began the game on a 12-0 run, the largest opening spurt this season.  Erwin Spencer and Buckhannon scored all 12 points and combined for Radford's first 20.   In that opening run, nine points came off six Gardner-Webb turnovers. 
 
Gardner-Webb would claw their way back in the game and closed the gap to six, 28-22, with an 8-0 run capped by a Dunovant layup with 2:38 remaining, but Radford kept composure and went into intermission up, 32-24.  
 
The Highlanders conclude the first month of 2012 with a 7 p.m. tilt at Asheville on Jan. 30.
