HOT-SHOOTING EAGLES DEFEAT MEN’S BASKETBALL, 70-54

ROCK HILL, S.C. – In addition to shooting 57 percent, Winthrop placed four players in double figures as the Eagles defeated Radford, 70-54, in Big South men's basketball action Thursday evening at the Winthrop Coliseum.
 
The loss was the 13th straight for the Highlanders as they fall to 3-14 overall and 0-5 in the league, while the Eagles ended a four-game skid improving to 5-10 and 2-2.
 
Matt Morgan led Winthrop with 14 points off the bench, Andre Jones added 11, while Joab Jerome and George Valentine scored 10 each. Valentine also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
 
Reggie Middleton just missed a double-double of his own with nine points to go along with a career-high 11 assists for the Eagles.
 
R.J. Price (Richmond, Va., Atlee) hit the 10-point plateau for the seventh straight game and paced Radford with 19 points, including five of his club's 10 treys.
 
The Highlanders knock down seven 3-pointers in the opening period, including one by Price at the 8:18 mark to go up, 21-13. Winthrop responded with a 19-5 run before taking a 32-26 lead into the break.
 
Winthrop used 10 straight points early in the second half to stretch the margin to double digits where it would stay the rest of the night.
 
Along with their impressive offensive performance, the Eagles finished with a 38-22 margin on the glass and held Radford to just 32.7 percent from the floor.
 
Winthrop outscored the Highlanders 42-12 in the paint and got 32 points from its bench.
 
Radford will enjoy a week break before continuing its three-game road trip on Jan. 12 at Liberty.
